Handy tips on writing your own copy

Spell-check everything – People rarely notice their own mistakes. Proof-read all text on your website and run it through a spell-checker. Spelling mistakes may seem unimportant, but they will look careless to a prospective client.

Be consistent – Some words can be spelt a variety of different ways. If you spell the word “colour” the American way in one sentence, and the English way in the next, it will look unprofessional. In your copy, take special care deciding whether you will use the word “and”, the symbol “+” or an ampersand. Also decide which way you will write numbers and dates and be consistent throughout.

Break up large areas of text – Big blocks of text are intimidating to anyone visiting your website for the first time. You can draw in people’s attention to certain areas of text by breaking up large paragraphs into smaller ones, or adding bullet points and sub-headings.

Read what you've written - A clearly written area of text is easy to read and requires little concentration to understand. If a paragraph has to be read more than once to be understood, you are doing something wrong.
